I can foil behind a boat. I can wing foil a bit.

no one ever told me 'Don't jump off the front'. So I thought I would give SUP foiling a try at Ggerroa. I was paddling out and was faced with an overhead height Wave that was crumbling at the top. I paddled up the face and jumped over the froth thinking that would be a safe outcome. I was very wrong. The board flung straight up into the air and the nose hit me harder than I've ever been hit by anything right on the flat part of my shin just below the knee.

Seven days later I'm still pretty bruised and swollen.

Today, I'm going wing foiling. I can't get enough!

Don't jump off the front. Always make sure to guide the foil in the opposite direction you plan on going. You can fall off the front if you make sure to pearl the board super deep first. Even that's not a good plan though. My front wing hit me in the bottom of the chin the other day doing just that.

I'm guessing jumping back isn't a good idea either? To the side then?

Falling off the back and kicking it forward is fine. Just not as you're going over the falls and you're falling right at the tail wing. Done that by accident a few times and it's super scary.

Best advice I have gotten is the X. Go to any corner. Seems to make sense. But yeah, the front is no bueno.

Hey, I,ve broken two paddles going over the front , I must hold them out as a defensive block. Reduced to building paddles out of old parts. haha

I jumped off the front once. The board kicked up and the nose hit me flush in the nuts. I've never done it again.

The most important advice for SUP (and surf) foiling is:

Do not get out in more than waist high waves!

For the learning phases, it will save your body and gear. And afterwards... it depends on how much is your available budget to repair / replace gear :-)
