Looking at pulling my boat out in October for for a bottom clean and antifoul. Also considering repainting topsides up to toelrail while it's out.

Can anyone recommend/info/feedback on previous experiences using roller/brush technique or a tradesman.

Boat is located in mandurah however moving to the river in October so have a few options for hardstands. Mandurah boat lifters/Henderson boat lifters.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Justin

Excuse the bad picture

I used an international "Toplac" single pac paint applied with a roller and tipped with a brush with excellent results. check the web site for details sand the gelcoat and simply follow the instructions.

Looks great whiteout!

Iv been reading up a lot and watching plenty of videos, using a roller and tipping it with a brush looks like the best way to achieve a great result!

im currently Painting mine, Roller and Brush for tipping seems to be working well (definitely a two person job)
im using HiChem 2pac iso Free (not as nasty for the lungs) price seems ok at $150 for 4 Liter's (3 Liter's part A 1Litre Part B.

Will admit not for the faint of heart, but with a good quality 6" orbital sander and plenty of sanding disks its easy done.
just consider the weather currently and trying to only paint in the "ideal" conditions. Hichem give a good how to document on all their paints.

Rolling gets great results but no short cuts with primer and undercoats. International is great paint.
Make sure you tape off or else youll end up with paint on winches etc like the moron previous owner did with mine

Hi Justin,

I am glad someone bought that boat....I was tempted at the price but don't have the time to do it justice. I will be keen to see how you go with it. I have to bring my Redwitch home as the handstand is needed for the Mandurah boat show.....a pain but a good excuse to get the hull painted. I am tempted to pay to get the whole job done properly. Time is short and sailing is soon!

STUMAN,

what sander are you using? Mine is anti fouled and I am loath to strip it in on my verge, so may just do the topsides. The current paint is very chalky and chipping in places so it will be sizeable job.

ALL,

You blokes are bad...I just bought some Stiener binoculars...My boat is called 'Witch Way Now? and given my struggling to find the next mark I have kept the name! Hopefully new binoculars will help the visually challenged.

yours aye,

MM

Okay, since we are talking about painting a yacht, can someone explain to me Paint vs Gelcoat polish? I keep seeing references to shipwrights giving owners who paint their boat the proverbial slap over the wrist.

When do you choose to run a gelcoat polish and when do you choose to paint?

I assume once you choose to paint that's it, you can't go back your committed to painting it. Does paint require more work in the long run?

I think your referring to gelcoat buffing which, if done right will buff out stuff in the paint and make her look awesome for 6 months. YOu apply a polish to a wet buffer to apply and buff it out dry. Cant do much for a paint job thats flaking off though - except prime 2 coats undercoat 2 coats then finish with about 3 coats. Alot of work but makes your boat new again and will last looking great for many years. Then just wash and occassionally polish after the paint job. Its really satisfying. I love painting boats. Helps to know someone at international paint too

In my opinion, topside painting is best left to someone who know what they are doing and has all of the right gear.

Ok, before everyone jumps on me about price, I am of the firm belief that you get what you pay for.

I did a lot of the initial sanding, back to where the shipwright/boatbuilder/painter took over. Long boarding is not my idea of fun, again top coat is only as good as the base.

Mine, water line to gunwale is painted in Awlcraft 2000 with 5 coats of clear , cabin tops etc in International Perfection with 3 coats of clear.

Clear has the benefit of protecting the colour from minor scratches, easier to buff and clean.

I have no complaints about the dollars ..... partly as the Awlcraft is a "one off" colour .......... but finish, absolutely stunning and hoping dont have to do it again for long time

The local International people were involved for the entire process ..... their input, invaluable.

Hi MEGAMIX,

Managed to pick it up at a great price, needs some work but planning on keeping her for a few years. Will most likely have the repairs done while she is down in Mandurah then pull her out in Henderson to paint the topsides. Im more than happy to pay someone to do it but seems a willing person is hard to find in Perth??

STUMAN - Ive been following your thread and looks like a great job! Would be very interested to see the final product and finish on the paint when you are done

DKD - im more than happy to leave it to a professional however here in Perth it seems very hard to find someone interested in doing the work
