Tasmania - cruising pics

Bit of interest about cruising Tasmania here, so remember it is not for everyone.
But here some old pics I found on a hard drive.

Pretty happy to get behind Waterhouse Island when the forecast 20knot from the South became 50 plus from the north west and the tide in Banks strait was flooding.
We stayed for another 30 hours.










It is usually a good sign when the fishing boats anchor beside you. You can just see his anchor cable pulled bar straight.

Retreating from Hunter Island after unsuccessful attempt to get down West coast, note the gloves.


What we went hiding from, 60 plus knots in the boat harbour at Stanley! Yep in the boat harbour behind the Nut and in the lee of the land.
It was most likely not survivable even in a very found vessel, if at sea on the other side of the Hunter Group.
I had taken some comfort that even the cray skipper called "Mad Dog" had returned to Stanley to sit it out.

Not all bad, in 3 months of cruising around the island we got caught in a gale at sea only once.

Adventure cruising at it's best, pre dawn getaway to make a good day of it!

I'm convinced those who live in Tasmania are all mad as the Norwegians when it comes to their sailing
It looks beautiful, but somehow like danger is lurking just over the horizon.

This is funny, this was Dick Smith and he was having radio issues (and the sat phone was on the blink) so his crew would come each morning to get the weather from us.

Dave Stewart, the boat builder from Port Fairy had steamed with his wife, this across and down the west coast to Hobart for the wooden boat festival and was steaming home and off Low Head when this was taken.
Single screw open cockpit.

wow, great photos, we spent two weeks driving around Tassy over Christmas. Thought we might want to bring our boat down here one day but it looks a bit rugged for us ;)

It is not everywhere you get snow on the hills just behind the mooring. October btw
Tip: if the Abalone boats start their engines at about 0300 hrs , get yourself going because you have about 4 days of good weather.
The Ab boats don't work that many days a year so they pick the very best.

Of course you do have a deal with the kelp beds to get there but RYCT guide give you a head start.

If it does not win line honours every race they should give it away.

Don, by the way, the big boat in front of your house tonight is sailed by the couple in the pre dawn pic above.
They left for Europe not long after the pic was taken and have spent the last 7 years cruising back to Oz.
Wintering over this year.

Doesn't that prove me point.
Melges 32 rates the same as a Farr 40 OD on IRC.
So if they are better sailors they should be beating the Farr 40 OD (trick question in there)
IRC does a pretty good job of predicting a boats performance.
So there are way behind their IRC mark.
They should be at least the same as Wired at 1115.
The only clear faster boat is Oskana (Cookson 50)

Melges are good in light wind upwind ,horrible above 20kts upwind but downwind weapons .
Give me a farr 40 anyday
