The Sabre Dinghy was introduced to the WA sailing scene only 3 years ago, there are now two clubs sailing them, East Fremantle Yacht Club and Perth Dinghy.
This season will see the inaugural State Titles with an expected fleet of 35 boats. There is an amazing 9 boats being built for WA alone this winter and a lot of interested parties considering the Sabre as their next boat.

Although the Sabre is an old design it seams that the comfortable sailing position, the wide range of age groups and the easy cheap built are the main factors behind the boats surgeons. With fleets of over 100 boats competing in the national titles it is well worth a look at the Sabre.

About 7 years ago I raced my Finn in the Masters Games in Canberra. The Sabres had the largest number of entries at 35 and their own start. They also had the oldest competitor at 83, his daughter at 63 also raced one. Lot of well known old sailmakers were racing there in Sabres and a competitor I raced against in about 1972 in OKs. We did not recognize each other just the names, he must have changed a lot as he got older.
Two years later I raced in the next Masters at Adelaide. This time there were only about 20 Sabres and they started 5 minutes before my class. Rough conditions and as we were killing time waiting for the second race to start an old codger in a Sabre appeared in front of me and I took his rudder assembly clean off. Finn never got a scratch. My insurance covered the damage but he was out for the series.

Our hulls are costing just under $1200 and the boat completed is approx $4800 or Boating Hardware sell fibreglass boats.

Great fun boat to build and if you do want any further info then the associations web site is http://www.sabre.org.au/WesternAustralia/index.html

We now have nine boats for the first season at EFYC.

Could not be easier, never built a boat before and we are getting them to paint stage with three weeks. We are only working on them a few hours a day and it is well set out in the builing plans from the association.

Give them a call, they where of great help and happy to assit when ever we needed any advice.

News to hand is East Fremantle Yacht Club is expecting 11 Sabres for its first season.

Rumour confirmed that sail maker Graham Hill is having a boat built.

Amazing growth, is it time you took a closer look at the Sabre Dinghy?

Hi SandS

We are having so much fun building them and they are so easy, we are planning on starting a 4th boat in the new year as the demand for boats is so over whelming. Although a bit of sailing first me thinks .

We are in Western Australia and the Sabre has only just hit our shores three years ago and is taking off in a very big way. WA has now some 15 new boats being built just this year and many people looking for second hand boats. We have 4 sail makers joining the fleet this season, which show the interest in the boat is huge.
