Last year I discovered Rivnuts after my genoa ripped part of my whisker pole track off the mast. Rivets or screws are okay for small stuff but a Rivnut gives you a substantial bolt in to a substantial nut inside the mast. If you haven't met them yet, Google it.
I use these ( Nutcerts) at work and have thought of using them also on my mast but had not heard of any one using them so have not yet but Ill do some more research. The only problem I can see if the screw and nut cert being use corrode over time ,seize and there might be a difficulty removing the screw at a later stage. (Years later) as the nut cert will turn in the mast. But I guess you can drill the screw out and also the nut cert head to release the nut cert
I've used these extensively in another life and they are quite good. The rivnut tool, however, was very expensive and it's difficult to do a reliable job without it.
Take your point about removing them HG.
Personally, I'll continue drill & tap, SS screws with Tefgel...
