Yor can rivet or tap, but I prefer tapping. When the rigger fitted my new furling boom they drilled and tapped all the fittings including the goosenecks for the boom and kicker which supports a 250kg 7mt boom.

You can use Duralac or Tefgel which is not as messy as Duralec.

With rivets I always use Monel, but remember to use Duralec or Tefgel.

With the steaming light just use Tefgel.

Last year I discovered Rivnuts after my genoa ripped part of my whisker pole track off the mast. Rivets or screws are okay for small stuff but a Rivnut gives you a substantial bolt in to a substantial nut inside the mast. If you haven't met them yet, Google it.

I use these ( Nutcerts) at work and have thought of using them also on my mast but had not heard of any one using them so have not yet but Ill do some more research. The only problem I can see if the screw and nut cert being use corrode over time ,seize and there might be a difficulty removing the screw at a later stage. (Years later) as the nut cert will turn in the mast. But I guess you can drill the screw out and also the nut cert head to release the nut cert

I wa always reluctant to put holes in my mast, aside from weakening it whatever gets put there is a snag point for something inside. A few times I made up a 3mm alumniym band to attach things. Like a big hose clamp. Has advantage you can adjust the position too.
