I might be headed up to Mackay for work in the next couple of weeks and was thinking of taking the weekend(s) off as well and trying to kite.

Seen a few other posts on the forums here but not entirely sure if there is a season for this or what my odds (spitball) are of getting decent wind at this time of year. If it's a coinflip I'm sort of happy to have a punt, but obviously if it's buckley's chance then I probably won't bother lugging all my gear up.

Just wondering if any locals have any idea? (I appreciate wind prediction is like a black art and I'd be hesitant to offer solid advice for my local area, but a spitball would be good.. Like at least if somebody asked if I was kiting in Brisbane in July I'd be able to say it's a 10-to-1)

And on a more general note is there a general site that people go to find these things? My google-fu seems to have failed. In general I struggle to have a systematic place to find info for kiting locations such as % wind I struggled to find the same sort of info for other kiting destinations according to season. Everytime I search for beaufort I keep finding towns in Victoria, France and Carolina!

Reckon you are a decent chance, biggest problem this time of year is the rainy season, flushes out the river and you get dirty brown water, logs and the possibility of stingers, better at low tide but a longer hike in/out. Water at town beach can be 2kms away on a big tide cycle.
usually around 15-20knts but if you get a cyclone somewhere off of the coast the winds pick up.
Otherwise looking for a decent high over nsw/vic and the isobars stacked up along the qld coast.
harbour beach/east point for wave chop, shoal point if you get a northerly, mid tide.

By 'logs', do you mean those floating ones with the teeth?

Contact Alex at Adrenaline Rush in Mackay for great advice and service. Winds from the north east at the moment so Northern beaches such as Bucasia and Blacks Beach are preferred. Regular trades over 18 knots have been lacking this year so we take what we can get. If I was coming to Mackay for a short stay then I would leave the gear at home unless you foil.

Mackay has been enjoying a return of the trade winds for the last week, some rain squalls in the mix but solid 20 knot plus winds for the last week.
