Live in Brisbane and have been kiting mostly on the GC. Can anyone tell me what kiting at Sandgate or Brighton is like. I am a beginner (I am up) and keen to cut down time in the car and get on the water.
Best wind?
I hear it is shallow, how far out can you go and still stand?
I hear you generally kite parallel with the beach?
Is Sandgate better than Brighton and vice versa?
Thanks guys

Both Sandgate and Brighton are good for learning , high tide no good for beginners though and bring a full wetsuit ( the jelly fish are killer at the moment).

Tide: 2.1m is the magic tide number - If it's over that, both beaches are a no go. If it's over 1.5m - head to Sandgate, it sits a little higher geographically and seems shallower. If it's under 1.5m - Either will do, just be prepared to walk a bit at low tide.

Wind: Northerlys and NNE - head to Sandgate... NE-Southerly - head to Brighton for the cleanest wind.

Go and buy a pair of imitation 'Skinz' from Kmart for $19. They're in the underwear section in black/blue boxes. They stop the jellyfish stings at the moment, although they'll be gone in a few weeks once the weather cools down.

Depending on where you live - give it a miss.
I live 6k from the city and can be riding on either coast in about an hour, just have to miss peak traffic. Seriously the coasts up and down are so much better than anywhere in Brisbane except out in the bay by boat. It took me about 6-7 years to work this out!!!

Generic answer: it depends :)

Both are have very newbie friendly conditions. Most of the time you can walk out maybe 50+m from the shoreline.

If you have beginner friends one thing I liked to do (and still do) is park a car at both Brighton and Sandgate and do a downwinder from one to the other. Gives you about 2km of downwind to play with.

Kurt

No see for a while, last weekend we had some of the old crew out for a session outside of mums, looked like a bunch of pensioners. Many have not been out for a year and it showed.

Jonny,
Kurts right you may as well head for the coasts as the kiting will be much better with more wind and less crowds. I always look forward to a kite away from the bay with clean water and most importantly clean wind. The wind in the bay around Sandgate & Brighton is always a little bumpy with holes in it. As for the crowds it just gets more and more people with most really good but the 1% who stuff it up for everyone are now enough in numbers to make sum sessions a pain.

Starting form the north...

Maroochydore
Kawana
Caloundra
Beachmere

Brisbane

Jumpinpin (by boat)
Runaway bay
Narrowneck
Broadbeach
Nobbys
Mermaid
Palm beach

all of which you would be set up and riding in 1.5hrs max.

But always check the conditions and ask locals for local knowledge. Dont just show up at a beach and expect it to be like every other beach you kite at.
Only takes a few minutes to find out if there is something you should know about a new spot.

I normally wearing skins underwear for kiting, but...still stung by jellyfish.
Need proper wet suit then will be fine..still scary when you passing on them^^
I pick one of the best thing about this places is that have lost of park space and short walk distance.
See you there.

bahumbug............i live here and never worn these stinger pants your on about. ride through the patches and do tricks away from them and take the odd little tickle. nothing compared to the blue bottle stings. if a beginner your gonna struggle if theres any swell on the coast. make sure to ride at sandgate if your a learner.

yeah it really depends on whether the barbs get into your skin, if it happens again douse with vinegar for a bit, then apply shaving foam and scrape the area with a credit card or shave it with a razor and stay out the water for a bit otherwise youll look like youve got the plague.

ive seen some people get really nasty holes in their skin, its messed up

So what is the verdict on these 'skins.' Do they work? November northerlies get too hot for a wettie.

Cortisone cream works if you're getting long lasting reactions (prescription stuff is better than over the counter.)

Verdict on skins or the cheaper wannabe skins....they work.

I started kiting this year and have worn them during the summer months, good to stop sunburn and stops jellystings. Unless you are going to get ones that have stirruped feet and/wear booties you will still have your ankles exposed.

Calendula cream works well for me if I do get stung though. It is a homeopathec cream/ointment but most big chemsits lines stock it for approx. $20

Teaspoon of cement guys.

Jelly type and pain index based on personal experience
Moreton Bay blue - Can kite through them all day just anoying.
Blue Bottles - After about 5 good stings your nuts and armpits hurt so you take a hour off the water then get straight back in.
Snotties - A good hit will end a session but you can kite the next day.
Moreton Bay Box - Very painfull like real painfull and off water for a few days. Again f#(king painfull.

It's a herbal extract, ie from Marigold (flower) plants.

Homeopathy is a specific name for airy fairy treatments involving diluting the stuff that's causing your problem (chopped up jellyfish in this case) in water to such a ridiculous level that not a single atom of the original remains. Followed up with some ritual banging and shaking. Somehow the water then magically remembers stuff that used to be in it and cures you.

Homeopathy does not mean herbal remedy, natural medicine etc. The words are not interchangeable.

Lecture over, go about your business people.
