Are there any other recommended kite beaches up in the cairns area?

Is there anywhere up there that has council trouble, or banned kite beaches?

Just trying not to step on any toes, while still being able to get an apartment walking distance to a kite-able location. :)

If you feel up for a great day trip, heading out to Green Island is a great spot with plenty of space, shallow water and breathe taking scenery. It allows for you to get out and kite without too large a crowd, the riding area is vast so if you want to pick a spot you will have no trouble. Another thing I would suggest is on no wind days get yourself down to the cable park and work on your board skills. Enjoy

Thanks y'all. I've been in Cairns now for just a few low-wind-weeks... And have a locals membership to the cable park. It always seems to be fanging through when I am at work! So frustrating!

Green island (uncrowded) sounds like exactly what I'm after, minus cracking my skull on coral.

I really appreciate all your help. I'll see y'all out on the water soon, and I hope to not cause too much of a hazard. I'm still on my Lplates.**

Green Island is definitely not suitable for L-plates.

Virtually no room for error when it comes to launching, must have absolutely confidence in upwind riding otherwise you are potentially in open water in a single tack.

Must have an appreciation of the tides for it to work, you will need 100cm+ to make the spot work. At about 200cm+ there is almost no beach to rig/launch from.

Must be experienced and confident with self rescue, there is no room for hesitation or mistakes, again you will end up in open water very quickly.

Other than that the winds are solid and consistent, water is beautiful and clean and mostly flat. Although this time of the year I imagine there would be a bit of Irikandji in that area.

Can you recommend anywhere to stay (camp) close to Yorkeys for cheap? (<$20 a night). Thinking of going up in June and hiring a campervan.

Or otherwise, how are the beaches further north towards Port Douglass (Wangetti, Oak), or up around Mossman (Newell, Wonga) for kiting and camping? I've been up that way heaps of times but never before for kiting.

Kiting potential is excellent north of Yorkey's Knob, but you'll probably be most likely on your own, as most locals kites Yorks, Palm Cove or Port Douglas. But there are heaps of potential in between, especially on low tide. Kewarra just up from Trinity Beach is great too on low tide and plenty of beach to set up and launch (I've been there personally but not kited. Nice flat water too). Just be careful of stingers like everywhere. Always wear a stinger suit. Don't worry about crocs. Rare to see them in open water, but not impossible. Sharks... again.. meh. The worst dangers are the stingers, especially Urikanji which are smaller than your finger nails.
Best advice will come from locals so check out the guys at Yorks and crew. They will be happy to help out.

There are no stingers in June mate, disregard the above post. Kewarra is rubbish on a SE wind due to the headland.
Port has some nice big stretches of beach i.e. 9 mile beach.
