Am looking at getting into kiting this year. Would like to start now - but from what I have read and heard the winds are not so good in QLD from April-September?

Any advice on where I can learn or options to get myself started during winter? I dont want to buy a heap of gear and only use it once a month....

Any direction on how I can still make learning gains during the wind "off-season"?

Don't scare the green horn off telling him to go to the cable parks do'n handle pass double front and back rolls then hit the sliders or he will go to time zone 1st thing green horns need to do is research what brand of gear he/she wants to fly and the style of riding they like e.g surf, freestyle, wakestyle etc then visit a shop talk to the staff i suggest that you buy second hand (1 season old) gear cause you will trash it then book in a few lessons and COMMIT COMMIT COMMIT take things slow ask questions and do everything you can to learn also you may want to join a club e.g AKSA, SEQKA etc as your membership includes insurance. Mate there is no wind worth kiting for a few months so the cable park is a great suggestion.
I surfed too.. There is little comparison to ridng a twin tip board under power.

If your planning on riding waves you'll need to head to the goldy or sunny coast so more than likely you'll be riding a twinny.

Definately start checking out kites but don't be in any rush to buy one just yet. 2009 kites are only getting cheaper.
Get some lessons if the conditions are right.... You might get lucky. But I'd be waiting till the season starts again to keep it all fresh.
The cable park will give you a bag of skills that will give you a huge jumpstart.

Wish someone gave me that advise when starting.

Trainer kite... Forgot about that one.

If you're after one I have a 3M Peter Lynn trainer with saftey loop type bar etc
You can have for $200 it's been used maybe 10 times and was bought new last year.
