One of my good mates who is a kite surfer got into this sport and has been in NZ doing this

here is a vid of what it is all about
#!

But I got a call from him yesterday and 4 weeks ago and you guessed it
Heavy crash - air evacced to dunedin -
Broken back - surgery - heaps of metal inserted to support the broken vertebrae - now in a full body cast - good news is he can walk and should be able to recover -

It looks like such a wild and fun sport - but can end in tears pretty quick

At least when they do it on snow there usually aren't trees to hit.
I understand the rush, just don't think it's a calculated risk i could take... what with landing being the most dangerous part of flying, and they're just 3/5ths of a ****teenth away from 'landing'.

only rocks .Unfortunately many of the people who do the hard core stuff are temporary inhabitants of the planet .Am keen to try it on gentler slopes .the guy who owns roundhill ski area in NZ is into it .there are some good vids there .

Most of these guys have extensive skydiving and base experience, especially in canopy control jumping highly loaded canopies.. Definitely not for the faint hearted but its an awesome experience..

I'd love to give that a go.... I wonder whether jumping off the sand dunes at Stokton would rate as a "go".

My idea would be to smoke untill your lungs give way, drink untill yer liver fails.... then do that sport off the highest mountain..... then end it all in one big rush!

I dare you
Can I watch

There is a nice steep sand hill at third creek redhead that would work in a NE and there is usually water at the bottom.

I'm 54. I don't have a speed wing as such. It's more of a mini-paraglider. Ridge soaring in stronger winds is a hoot. You can pull some decent G's in a diving swoop.

Speed flying is all very well if you have humunguous mountains to leap off. Australians have to make do with large hills and sand dunes.
