Hi
used the heavy canvas bag buried as sand anchor which works.
Used alloy home made (longer and bit bigger than what you can buy)sand auger which i still sometimes use.
Both have pulled out at different times in heavier winds so show caution for either.
cheers

I worry something like that could get pulled out and you will have a powered kite dragging a pointy spear down the beach.

A Canvas bag sounds like a better idea.

Or better yet teather to a heavy immovable object on the beach.

Yea but over here it's getting harder and harder to find ex Kiwi rugby players willing to be buried to their necks in sand and have a chicken loop stuck in their mouth.
Seems they'll only let you do it twice before they jack up.

If you can't find a rugby player then what about one of these? There's a handy spot to look after your keys too.

Surely you could just tether to any part of the scaffolding that must cover your country

Maybe people dont want the increased where and tear from a self launch? If you've ever kited or been on some of the beaches around Alkimos for example, you'd be crazy to self launch. Sharp and jagged stuff everywhere and nowhere to tether

I use a dog spiral stake. Holds my 12m in 25kn no problems. Realistically the kite is only on the tether for 9 or 10 seconds as you run up the lines.

If u have shallow water (not instant water depth like launching off the cliff), u can just put half of kite in the water, half on the beach. Board or some sand, rocks (soft ones) on the part that is on the ground. Pull kite in the water with steering line, no wear at all since kite is floating to the edge on the water.
If u do hot launch, u gonna be dragged in the water so again, its safer than landlaunch.

I realize this works good only on cross shore (on-off slightly too) but, no wear. And i realize this in 15-20 kts, never launched in more. (i am still noob) Since i am beginner, i do downwinder far upwind from local kiters till i can catch that upwind edge so i am forced to selflaunch.

Also, if selflaunching fully from the beach, why not use some old tent material, polyester, couple of garbage bags ductaped or whatever? Fits in the bag, u can even wrap it around the board in the car or whatever and launch from that. Or idk, wrap wet equipement in it so it doesnt get the trunk wet?

Soft bag buried in sand maybe best.
Spike thing left poking out of sand while I'm out kiting sort of lends itself to a lawsuit.

Nothing other than a bit of rope sticks out of the sand. The blue plastic is the new version designed for wider hands and to get more depth. Stubbed toe at worst. As it screws into the sand. Requires a bit of effort to pull it out. Rated for dogs up to 45kgs(their lead attaches to the circle bit) in the grass but my kite (core) simply sits nicely.

Cost is probably $25 by the time you buy rope and a clip

I can't believe that thing holds in sand?

The sandbags / giant cork screws / dog tethers/ umbrella screws etc don't have to hold down anything though do they? The kite just sits on it's wingtip ready for launching once its in position but the kite certainly doesn't pull the screw out.

My kite doesn't even move or bounce around but if in that 10 seconds it takes to run up the lines(and im slow), it pulled out from a gust, the kite would probably end up in the dunes but its still unpowered isnt it. Still not ideal of course but i haven't had an issue in 2 years. Assisted launch or land is always better but fortunately not always available

Nothing wrong with a screw I use one from a pet shop. Just need to remove the soft sand and screw it firmly into the harder sand. Attach your kite bag so you find it again and others don't trip over it. And when tethering of course depower the kite plus push out the bar, and walk along the upper middle line to the kite or back respectively. That avoids the kite going up to and over the zenit which may pull out the screw. In crappy small onshore beaches or beaches full of crap like rocks, branches etc I use such screw. On a clean sandy wide enough beach I self launch/land.

Simple
No rocket science
Simple large self closing system
You don't want to be fannying around
Trying to undo a small clip or carabina
A non elasticated broad strap at correct and comfortable length for you

This clip self closes and open with a flick of thumb cost $10 had it 5/6 years

Just put the last coat of paint on mine this arvo, gonna give it a crack tomorrow...

Newbie to the sport, have self launched but didn't like the way the kite scraped along the beach. Then when landing, pulling the release and letting the kite flag out meant tidying up the Bar and Lines was a pain in the )(*&%$. Figure this way will be heaps better....

Mild Steel Rod 20mm diameter and 3mm Plate - $30 worth of steel.
fully welded, bout 2 hours work. worst part was beating the (*%$ out of the screw to get the form right. coat of cheap paint. 180 kg breaking force rope with 200 kg carabina. screw should be good for at least 200 kgs pull out force.
might not look that flash, but should do the job for all up about $50 and some labour!

Nice work munty but I honestly think this type of anchors are really dangerous. I had a near miss at the local when someone was launching off a concreted in beach sign, had set up lines wrong and the kite went soaring through the window, ripped the post and concrete footing out and flew though the air and nearly hit me before the whole lot crashed into the sand dune. Very scary.
I don't think sand anchors would be as strong as a 700mm square block of concrete and that was not enough

Maybe this is labouring the point to the wrong audience, but if you correctly self launch on the right angle the kite will pivot on its wingtip (where the reinforcing is on nearly every brand) without damage. And you don't have to pull your safety to self land, you can just unhook your chicken loop. The two hours of labour would have been better practicing self launch and lands - you would be up $50 and not need a metal stake at the beach.

And if these various arrangements do pull out of the sand you will have a kite that is disconnected from you and fully capable of powering up and/or wrapping around other beach users.
