Finally had some time to put together a short video of our day trip up to Old Bar last week. Truly one of the best days I've ever had out on the water. 20-25 knots for most of the day, an outgoing tide, fun surf, and beautiful blue sky. Couldn't ask for anything more. By the time I brought out the chopper, the tide was all the way out and the wind had dropped to 12-15 knots. You'll get the idea!

Make sure you watch in HD:

Awesome vid, as an RC flyer myself I can't wait until I get to do a kite holiday and get some aerial footage.

What platform are you flying? Looks very stable and clean.

Would love to get up to Old Bar one day as well

Yeah... I've been through a few platforms before I settled on the setup I'm using today. Super happy with it: I'm using the simple bcg gimbal controller on a custom built frame.

Nice mate, yeah I am still working through a few different platforms to find one I am really happy with.

Great footage and editing. Don't know anything about RC flying but I've seen guys wearing goggles to get POV footage - is that what you do to frame your shots ?
How specialist is this kit - could anyone get started with a Parrot Drone , or is this uber $$$ kit ?

Thanks for the positive comments everyone... Old Bar is definitely an amazing spot. If you hit it on the right day, it's for sure one of the best kiting locations in the world.

As for the copter, it's something I've been working on for almost 2 years now. My mates down here in Sydney can attest to all of the trials/tribulations I've been through with a few different setups. This setup seems to work perfectly for this application. It can handle 20knots without an issue, and could probably fly in up to 25 knots (with a shorter battery life). The AR Drone is a good intro to multi copter flying, but it's really a toy in comparison. It definitely could not fly in any sort of wind as it doesn't have the weight/power to support it. If you're looking for an a good intro kit, I'd probably look at the hoverthings setup: www.hugedomains.com/domain_profile.cfm?d=futurehobbies&e=com You're still looking at $1,500 for a basic setup, and it won't have any sort of gimbal stabilisation. It is however a really fun first person view setup. If you're not sure what FPV is, check out this video:

I'm planning to do a lot more filming of kiting/surfing. I'll post more footage on here as soon as I have something new. Otherwise, just subscribe to my YouTube channel.

Cheers,

Jez
