Ive been consistently practising kite loops for a good two months now slowly aiming towards Lenten's hugeness.

A few questions for those out there that can do big kiteloops. Atm my loops are probably 6-8 metres high, but i have very hard landings despite the kite being above my head, I want the kite to loop low but still land pretty hard. When i bar out though you dont get the same grunty tug from the loop. Should i just jump higher and loop a little later. Anyway you get the jist of my issue, too many damn bruised heals

Just wanna go higher and harder without breaking a leg.

Also will shorter lines help? got 25's on an 07 fuel.

The kite may appear to have made it back above you but i don't think it's "catching" you before you land - hence the harder landing. Try pulling harder on your back hand to make the kiteloop tighter and get the kite round and back above you quicker. Sheet out once the kite is back on it's way up. Once you find you're feeling some lift from the kite to soften your landings you can work on going bigger and getting the kite lower through the loop. Getting more height may help, but you still need to get your timing right so that the kite makes it back above you with some lift just before you touch down. As you've seen, LEN10 gets very high and you'll often see him drop very fast until just before he reaches the water. Once the kite is above him he's already piloting it to ensure he's not swung under it (causing it to stall) and has the right amount of forward momentum when landing.

Thanks for sharing the vid. Keep going big!!

Hi Passingwind,

A bit dangerous liability wise to hand out info on Lenton Style loops. First thing is Lenton goes out in MEGA winds (30-40 knots) and takes a big kite for the conditions (9m). He also uses shorter lines than standard (~20m).

What you need is to be a little bit crazy, a big bit ballsy, have a lot of skill, and be unbreakable.

Boost as high as you can go in smooth water so you can get a clean take off, this sort of thing isn't good in rough chop (you'll break). Just short of the apex of the jump, pull on the back hand to loop it. The kite will loop hard and fast and return to 12. You'll be going downwind faster than the kite at this stage so let the kite go well upwind of you to act like a brake/parachute to slow down your downwind speed and then loop it again to bring it back downwind of you as you land. The late loop will cushion your descent rate.

Make sure you have smooth water to land in otherwise pain is your new friend and probably a hyper extended knee.

Disclaimer: Do not attempt this type of looping unless you are of extremely high riding standard, know your kite and gear well and are confident you can pull it off first time. Why do you reckon so few people Mega loop? You don't want to land on your head in one of these, it's just out of the question. Try at your own risk. I will not be responsible for any accident, damage, death or incident for anyone trying Megaloops.

If you were ready to pull "Real" megaloops, you wouldn't have to ask this question. I'd suggest working on regular loops.

Cheers,

KH

pull ups are the future.

lol dude its just somethin ya gota figure out yurself on ur own gear.. some kites you gota hold bar in close through the loop then push out to let it fly up quick, others u can keep in all the way others you cant at all, just play around with it and ud get it

Hey 2manybakedBeans

Great little vid clip - Is that the landing height you were talking about ????
If so, then your in for a rude awakening make sure you can do soft ride aways with the kite sent forward again before bigger stuff, also get some nice thick pads to soften the high impact landings for your heel bruisises

Adding to others, remember that as you increase windstrength by 5 knot increments +-.. so does the timing, pull, speed, height & distance and then theres obviously a different set of numbers that go with kite size too.

I'd recomend sticking to 1 kite size while gettin it down to maintain your timing & preferably about an 8m ish - the faster turning the better, that way you can parachute in with a back stall and gives you more time for your landing loop(s)

I'm no pro at this and have been beaten more times than I can conciously remember wear a PFD & padded canoe helmet while learning - it just might !! save you when youve over rotated & land backwards headfirst from 30 or 40 feet at warp speed ... fun though

Anyways - post some vids of you goin larger, especially the wipeouts - they rock

cheesz

Here is a video showing how I do my megaloops. You can see how much height I get on them and how I loop the kite lower than myself. This is not for the faint hearted people, don't try this unless you're really advanced.

Laurie, how are you going with the new 'sarcasm' font?
Is it ready for release? maybe even a beta version...

as said previously if you have to ask your prob not ready to do a full on mega loop. But if you think you are here are a few tips; even hooked in for the mega loop i use the fish pole technique on the bar to get the kite around quick enough, then let it hang behind you for the extra quarter of a second to slow you down. Height is everything...

Thanks for all the replies,

well, for those that they say im probably not ready, id agree but im asking in order to avoid possible wipouts which maybe a little technique advice could change. Im going to continue to go harder and higher at my own risk, but i will not be doing antyhing like lenten anytime this year or ther year after, or ever.

I do agree that Kiteloops and worse still mega loops are not for the faint hearted they hurt, especially when you slap your balls. Ill get there with time.

Thanks again.

Yeah the balls slapping aspect actually scares me the most about trying kiteloops..
Any way to avoid this? I guess HTFU would not be wise for that issue.

As long as you are married, have kids and a mortgage you don't need them anyway!!!

In response to Charl - I'd agree. What 99% of people are calling megaloops are not - if you use that term. We all think we are going bigger than we are. I was out overpowered on a 7m last week and pulled it in a big jump and had my arse handed to me big time. It fkn hurts.

I have seen lenten kite a few times and he has amazing timing and kite control - you don't appreciate it fully until you have seen it in person. Coming out of a big KL faaast and timing the 2nd loop to soften the landing is hard to get consistently. To do it properly you have to loop on the size jump you normally won't try anything on.

Post pics please! Shorter lines (20M) and very powered.

yeah i agree, most people are looping the kite above their heads and callin it a mega loop, the hardest thing i think is the fact you know that even if it goes slightly wrong its really really gonna hurt. Getting timing right is hard but prob understanding how much wind you need to actually get the height and landing is harder. Good luck to anyone trying :)

5 meters up aint no mega-loop. I weigh 84 kgs and only try them when its 25 knots +, use a 9m fuel on 21m lines. Doing kiteloops for 3 years and slowly going bigger. To actually get massive height some kickers can help but then it's even harder to time. There's a no go zone, where you cant land as you land soo hard and that extra bit of height where the kite will catch you.
