Arhh bugger. Feel for his family and friends. Kiting is going to ramp up coming into summer, keep an eye on the conditions, your gear and other kiters, to help all go home at the end of the day. RIP brother.

I saw a kiter out near the entrance to the shipping channel for quite a while which is unusual and dodgy as. He came in near the marina which is also v. Unusual. I wonder if he was out looking for something. And there was a cop car with lights on where he came in.

The kiter I saw must have been tracking the dead guy so the Sea Rescue boat could find him and pick him up. Explains why the police met him when he made it back to the beach. What an awful experience.

For the local crew there is a board and kite still out there, presumably drifting a very long way north. The board belongs to one of the guys that tried to help and the kite belongs to the fella that passed away. If either are found they need to make their way to the cop shop.

... can you remember what kite, colour and brand of the dude that was there helping/tracking? I have a mate of mine who was there that day and was wondering???

I'm up at horrocks for the weekend Chris so will take a drive and see if I can find any kit on the beach

i recieved a txt yesterday afternoon and was hoping it was a false alarm/sighting, great efforts by a few to try and help,
such sad news for his family and partner,
pleaseguys check your equipment, ensure you have a line knife and get that safety attatched to the front of your harness, if you get in trouble you may need all the help you can muster, im sure all water users would like to pass on our thoughts

Point Moore in a southerly is actually quite dangerous. If something goes wrong you have a heaps of ocean to travel before you will arrive back to land about 20 kms north. RIP and condolences to your family and friends.

Point Moore is an epic kite area but it can throw massive swell at you then reefs that suck dry, left n right handlers ,closeouts all in the space of a couple of minutes

Authorities have praised the bravery of a man who helped rescue crews recover the body of a kitesurfer off the Mid West coast of Western Australia.


Two fellow kitesurfers found the body of the 49-year-old floating in waters off Point Moore beach in Geraldton, 400 kilometres north of Perth, on Thursday afternoon.


It is understood the man, who is from Geraldton and whom police initially said was 50 years old, was kitesurfing at the popular spot when his kite became uncontrollable.The details of what followed are not clear, but a number of kitesurfers tried to help the man before raising the alarm.Crew from Geraldton Volunteer Marine Rescue (GVMR) were called to in to located him.GVMR vice commander Jamie Jones, the skipper of the rescue boat, said the conditions were challenging.


"We had nearly two metres of swell, 20 knots of wind in the southerly direction which really turned it on for us," he said."So we were really pushing against the elements there."


'He's one of the bravest blokes I know'Mr Jones said one kitesurfer stayed out in rough conditions near the floating body so that crews could recover the man."He's one of the bravest blokes that I know; circling and trying to do everything he could to get the man to safety and alerting us that there was an issue," he said."We were very lucky to have him on the water with us."Without him we would have been out there trying to search for a man that is on the water ... not the easiest thing to look for in those conditions."


The 49-year-old was found unconscious and he could not be revived."It's been a hard time but we've got the support of the community behind us and all our friends and family," Mr Jones said

Was told some details but it'd be unfair and insensitive to make a comment, I was out at Dongara on a 7 lit up it was more into the 30s here than 20 as stated in the media

I'd imagine the guys that tried to help are pretty distraught at the moment and are replaying it in their own minds over and over. It's probably too soon to expect them to go public with their own personal account on what happened. But from the snippets I've heard locally the guys should never need to buy a beer again.

Massive respect to the guys who were out and tried to help. Hopefully get to share the wind with you one day. Massive respect also to the rescue crew.
