If spending all day Saturday and Sunday polishing your knob and cleaning your pipes is how you roll "goodluck"

I couldn't think of anything worse to waste time money on.

But nice cars if your a fan.

A sticker [ circa 72'] on Buzz's blue Kombi Van side window said " don't be a meddlar with the peddlar", he thought if he had a sticker like that he wouldn't get hassled by the cops, nah he got busted

I kind of remember the Sandman cars from the 70s. There were some that had pretty amazing paint jobs I think. Like a big muscly bloke standing on a mound of skulls with a chick in one hand and a sword in the other.

Anyway Chryslers are much cooler than any Holden. I'm tempted to buy something like a VH Valiant. Must beat temptation and pay off the mortgage.

The key now is to pick what cars that are cheap right now will become collectables in the future. Collectables from the 60s and 70s are already expensive. Not sure about the 80s but perhaps its time to start looking for classics from the late 80s and early to mid 90s.

I sold an original orange HJ one of these with the stickers, 253 and 4 slot DIY box out of Keith Motors (Bryan Byrt Used Cars) in 1985 for $4,500 on a rainy day when none of the other blokes would shift their backsides out of the office.

I got the buyer on finance and Fortron Warranty too. The buyer would have made money if he followed my advice (keep it and look after it); I made money on the day but not the other pricks who would not give me a hand to get it started because it had a flat battery.

Also sold an HJ Statesman 253 and an HZ Premier 253 out of that yard. Brilliant cars. I don't believe GM Australia has put out a decent vehicle since the HZs and WBs.

That is an opinion expressed, not a challenge for an arguement.

P.S. Great music track for a great car. Joe Camelleri and the Black Sorrows. Another Great Australian Icon.

Thanks doggie. There are plenty of Ford panel vans around with the bread van doors ( ex Telstra etc) but the GL (up and down tailgate with head lining right through) is a rare bird these days and worth the big bucks.

I always thought the Cleveland V8s were a bad match in the XDs, Es and Fs. Too heavy and putting the cars out of balance.

Very tight fit too. Just ask someone who has changed the spark plugs in one. Engine has to be dead cold to start with.

I had an XY Falcon 500 years ago that had a 302 Windsor with a C4 box and that was a really sweet little motor. Ford were using up surplus Canadian Windsor engines and gear boxes due to a less than expected demand for F 100s with V8 engines. I sold that car for $1,200 to a collector on the Sunshine Coast who had at least one of each model going back to the XMs

I seem to recall that Ford put out a fairly limited number of panel vans to compete with the Sand Man but what they called it escapes me.

Chrysler did not want to be left out of the race so they came out with the "Drifter".

Ford Sundowner.

http://uniquecars.carpoint.ninemsn.com.au/portal/alias__uniquecarsau/tabID__203009/ArticleID__7786/DesktopDefault.aspx

Whilst I am a bit of a holden sandman follower - owning both a HJ and a HX (needing resto). I would love a Drifter or Sundowner so if you have one in the shed that you think is taking up valuable windsurfing gear space - feel free to call me.

- Saw possibly my very first XA van a few months ago in Perth driving around (yellow I think). I can't remember ever seeing one before.

80's collectable car - tough one?

You nailed it there wayneg!! I knew Ford was in that market too and the Sundowner was it. They did it with Falcon, Escort and Transit vans.

Like the article says, the manufacturers had got to the stage of offering whatever engine and drive train options the customer wanted and even went as far as trim options if it was a factory order.

The horniest van I ever saw and drove was an XD GL. I am sure it was an 80-81 alloy head model. It came into stock at Bryan Byrt Used Cars Springwood and we all loved it.

It was Hermitage Red, chrome 12 slotters, big black Falcon sticker between the front and rear wheels below the rubber fender strip, smoke tinted bubble windows on the sides and tail gate.

The donk was a stock 250 crossflow with extractors and twin exhaust that really sounded sweet when you hit the power band at 2300 rpm with a top rail 4 slotter behind it. The cab was full S-Pac but no air or steer as I recall.

What really topped it off was the really simple but sexy way the rear was fitted out. The GL vans had head lining all the way back so that was done by Ford. The sides of the van back had curtains on those spring wire plastic coated rails top and bottom. Below the curtains, using plywood covered with white furry stuff and hiding the wheel arches were these lockers in which you could store food , grog, vibrators and other small toys, and which made the remaining deck into a rectangle.

That rectangle was covered with foam rubber which in turn was covered with the same blue Satin material the curtains were made of. If ever there was a phuck twuck, that was it.

We used to park it on the grass verge in front of the yard with the back open and facing the road. The young blokes would come along and s**** their pants as soon as they saw it.

It was 1985 and they put $11,500 on it which was probably more than it sold for new and would have to be the reason it took 2 weeks for it to sell.

If I wanted to do a motoring trip around Australia it would be in a panel van with a trailer behind for the rest of the camping gear and the wind and water toys.

Cheers Cisco.

My mate had a XD pano just like that but was metalic blue and windowless. Top car but it couldn't handle being parked at the beach all the time and rusted out big time. drove the poor thing into the ground.
My wife has a 78 V8 commodore. She loves it so I've had to really look after it, hasn't done a lot of miles. Been trying for a few years to get her out of it because its never been happy on unleaded fuel.
Last year I brought home a nearly brand new VY and told her to have a drive. cruising along she says
"why am I driving this"
I say "I'll buy it for you today"
she says "I dont want this, my cars nicer"
No sale. To be real honest I think she was right, the VB's a pretty sweet ride. Took a 100 series GXL landcruiser to get her out of it.
Now its occupying shed space. She's found out its one of the oldest V8 commodores on the planet. She's even managed to get it on vintage rego. Does that make anyone feel old, its 33 years old.
