I'm going to move into the new era and get a smart phone. What's best to get iphone or an android phone? Durability? usability? reliability? restrictions?

I would say iphone but I dont like the 5 Im still using the 4 and its been going for 3 1/2 years no probs at all, not even a smashed screen

I have a THL (Technology Happy Life) W7 5.7" phablet and its great. I don't really need a computer anymore for browsing, watching movies, listening to music or podcasts, email and bit of gaming. My wife has an iPhone 4S and it looks so small and dull in comparison. It cost me about $250. They can be bought now for less than $200. A friend has a W9 model of the same type of phone that comes with more memory, higher resolution screen and faster processor. I think it costs around $300.

Unless you need an Apple only application like Facetime I would not consider an Apple phone.

I love my iphone. Really easy to use - i don't need all the other technical stuff - wouldn't know where to begin. My mum got an iphone now she can actully make calls and texts when she not at home!

Any smaller is too small to have a usable touch screen.

Funny thing is phones are getting bigger not smaller!!

Bad idea to put phones in your shirt pocket, cause when you bend down to pick something up they fall out:(

I'm happy with my Galaxy S3, with the exception of some fine lines that go up the side of the screen. Motorola before that, which wasn't bad, but the S3 is a definite improvement.

iPhone you get a fixed size choice.

Android you can pick from the 'mini' to the 'mega', waterproof if you want it, ruggedised if you want it, whatever floats your board.

So size shouldn't be the deciding factor.

I wouldn't go Nokia, due to Windows. It's a distant third in phone OS's and apps. Look at all the popular apps it's fruit or android.

I wouldn't personally touch fruit co, because I like choice and I like my bigger brighter screen than fruit phones have. And I hate the dreaded itunes with a passion.

Personally I like to tinker; but you don't need to with an Android phone. My mum loves her Galaxy Nexus, outta the box. My sister loves hers too, and semi-tinkers (installs lots of apps etc) I rooted mine and flashed a number of different ROMS till I found one that is perfect for me. (www.slimroms.net/index.php/slim-bean-features) Very smart young people code them and bug fix them and tailor them for the exact make and model of phone you have.

I love live wallpapers, something fruit phones miss.

This is my home screen - it's about a million miles prettier, and more sophisticated then a fruit screen, which looks day-glo colours (you don't get a choice, iOS7) and blocky by comparison.. The blue waves move slowly, and move fast under your finger. The volume bar is showing when I took the screenshot, and running over the date under the clock.

Got my bros old iphone. No $$$ and a great product.

Had an iphone for over 3 years and changed to android and bloody hate it going back to Apple.

I just realised of course that if I go iPhone then I'll have to have iTunes on my puter, and I'll never install that sloppy piece of memory sucking ****e again. Android here I comes!

Why? It's only A 3gb download, installs 57 related pieces of fruit software, requires an update every 17 minutes, and only chews up any *spare* CPU or RAM. What's not to like?

I haven't owned an Android, but my son has a Galsxy S4 and loves it, although he is onto his 3rd screen- either they seem a bit fragile or he is just rough on phones! I've had an iPhone 4S the last couple of years and like it. Before that a Blackberry. I don't think it really matters what you get. They are all reasonable quality these days. Try a few in the shop, check out friends phones and choose one you feel comfortable with.

My Samsung Omnia Icon that everybody said not to buy "cos it will crash all the time blah blah" has been faultless for 4yrs ( until I wet my pants )

I've gone for iPhone 5S cos it will cost me nothing and with a Lifeproof case it will be good enough....... and yes Nebbs, will just use it for phoning and SMS. My "phones for phonin " phrase seems to be vindicated when I see all the people here getting a little stiffy over what o.s is best. Seriously? FFS it is a phone with little gadgets to suck u in. If anyone truly cared about speed, storage, picture quality, they'd get a computer and real DSLR camera. Anything else is a wankfest keepin up with the Jones'

But back to iPhones 5s ..... I am worried about how I will get into the fkker when my thumbprint is all munted from a welding/cutting/hammering accident though. They should make it a penis print to unlock it cos it is the only part blokes look after well.

Smart Phones (and especially iPod touches) make cool TV remote controls too. I'm constantly streaming music and videos from Vimeo or YouTube or podcasts etc. etc. to my home entertainment system. There is certainly more HD stuff on YouTube than there is on free-to-air. The American's Cup was awesome.

AirPlay rocks.
I assume there is an Android equivalent.

I still don't get the whole "customise your phone" appeal of Android. Reminds me of this:
