I caught this fish in NSW, I was planning on eating it just after a quick sanity check, does anyone know what it is? I can't match it up on the fish chart.
* Caught NSW, Newcastle just offshore off the rocks
* Large scales
* Blue spots
* 42cm

Troll thread?

If as you would take anything home without knowing if its a protected species?'/ and or legal size limit.

Either way, I guess fisheries have your IP address now anyway...

no idea of legality - but the museum link says they grow to 38cm, and the one caught is 4 cm over that.

Eat it if you must, but most all parrot fishes taste like crap IMO, pretty damn boney also.

Thanks Crusoe!

Various fishing sites tell me they are delicious, it is considered a delicacy in many parts of the world. I'll take their advice, the flesh looks white and tasty, dinner for tonight!

Also, regarding the keyboard warrior comments - wake up to yourself it's a fish that's not mentioned in the department of primary industries website (I'm familiar with the listed endangered specifies). There's bigger fish to fry!

I'm pleased to report it was delicious! I'll send some photos to that website listed earlier, I have one of it with a measuring tape - might help with some research who knows.

Also, the guy from fisheries I spoke to recommended logging anything unusual to red map, this doesn't qualify as unusual though (www.redmap.org.au/).

Yeh wrapped it in aluminium foil on the bbq, didn't want to add herbs/lemon or anything for the first try. The flesh fell apart, no tiny bones, I'll definitely bring more home.

Good on you mate, enjoy the food on your plate.

Many fish are despised by some, but enjoyed by another.

Australian salmon, for example. the best for fish patties.

I mean that in a good way: I can't find a better fish for fish patties than Aus salmon, but they're sold for 30c per kilo as cat food...

The fish pictured is halfway between a baldy and Aus salmon, enjoy it, and as many as you catch after it.
