Does anyone else think it's rude when callers ask to be put through to someone without introducing themselves first? I am not a professional receptionist, but since the GFC we haven't had one in my office and we share the phone answering duties between the 6 of us.

When this does happen I ask who is calling before I agree to put them through, just in case the person they are after needs to be 'in a meeting' rather than speak to them.

What!? You have to wear a skimpy skirt to work one day a week now??

Yes - I do think it's rude not introducing yourself but.. like.. whatevs.. would be the standard response.

OK - how's this one...

I'm in the gents having a squirt - then hear a mobile phone ring in the occupied cubicle. Surely this guys gonna push it to voicemail I say to myself...

OH NO! He answers, "good morning, XXXX here, how can I help you?"... then "...just a second..." Next - a VERY obvious jingle jangle of pants 'n' belt - then FLLUSSHHH!!!

You gotta be kidding me... no one's that busy (and no one wants to know what you are doing right at that moment!!!).

PS -I'm presuming that he answered after the wipe!!

Yes, but even worse, when they do ask but obviously put you thru without telling the other party your name or the reason for your call.
Telstra and banks etc are the worst for that - you tell them a 2min story about what you need and they put you thru to another dept without even saying to them even an abbreviated "this guy wants...."
And that dept asks you all over again name, DOB, password, mother's maiden name, etc etc....

The one that really peed me off was when I got a call at home one the evening. It kinda went like this:

Me: "Hello"
Caller: "Hello, who's speaking please?"
Me: "Well, you called me. Who were you expecting to talk to?"
Caller: "I'd like to know who I'm talking to"

... a short argument ensued. [}:)]

Turns out it was someone from wifey's family! Hadn't heard from them in years.

Telephone ettiCUT is a very simple thing. You CUT to the chase becuase
telephone calls cost MONEY.

I am amazed that it is even being discussed on the forum. Must be a lot of
bored Seabreezers

If the telephone call is potential money, you make the call, in or out, sweet,
and you answer the incoming with your full name slowly enough so that the caller gets it. Basic.

One drop of honey will attract more flies than a gallon of vinegar.

The same thing applies to the home or mobile phone except if it is not being used for business, first name will do.

It should always be "Smile A Phone" even if it is "Mahatma from Mumbai".

There is something you can learn from every other human being on the
planet. Woth thinking on.

If I receive a phone call from some ill-mannered youth asking if my daughter is there, without so much as introducing themselves, I say yes she is..then hang up. I've always taught my kids to use correct phone manners, politeness starts at home.
don't know why I'm so grumpy lately and that really pi**es me off [}:)]

No. I'll tell you something that many, many, many people would relish the opportunity to tell you.
In the absense of a Receptionist, you have become what is commonly referred to by Job Seekers everywhere as
The Troll At the Front Desk Who Prevents People From Getting A Job(joking)

not generally but I do think its rude when you ring a business seeking technical advice and the receptionist huffily tells you that she provides it, sounding insulted cos you didnt automatically assume a woman would be providing it.

No not at all, I actually find it rude to ask who it is. If they ring and say can I speak to Joe Bloggs please, what the hells it got to do with me who's on the other end of the line, I'm happy it's not for me and reply yeah sure here he/she is.

Butttttt if my work mate says "if that's for me I'm not here" when the phone rings, Then I'm happy to oblige and say their out at the moment, can I take a message for them to call you back, well sure I'll do that. Or a work mate might say if anyone rings me today ask who it is before passing them on, then no worries, I'll ask.

you need to employ a crank yanker as a member of staff on the frontline, with that you will achieve above average quotas for your bossman and his Beeyatch Muppets.

I think it depends on if you're answering the phone in a reception-type role and the size of the business. If you're a receptionist for a large firm with many different branches and hundreds of employees you don't really care who they are when they call, just shove them through. Sometimes the big important people like to have their calls announced so you ask.

If you are not a receptionist, but you get a call for someone in your office you ask who they are so you can tell them that so and so is on the phone for them and they can say "put them through" or "nah, don't want to talk to that %#^$@"
