An incredibly sad day, in my opinion he was the most amazing person of the past 50 years, by a long way.

As a South African I'm especially worried that the country will suffer hugely without his guiding spirit.

Yeah sad day indeed. Even worse is all the people acting sympathetically on facebook, pretending they knew how influential he was. His "I had a dream" speech will go down famously in history. RIP

i did history at school to yr 12 but was never interested, so I know only the basics. I do however find it odd (and this may just be my ignorance) that he is heralded as such a ledgend and even had the nobel peace prize, and that Obama gave a long speech saying how it would be hard to imagine the world without him etc. I would have thought you would only get accolades like that if your past was unblemished. If martin luther king or roza sparks (or whatever her name was) was involved in bombings/ domestic terror in their country they'd still be in jail. Do we not only accept but celebrate violence and bombings against unjust governments? Pretty wierd coming from the US and their record with institutionalised racism and as victims of terrorism...

I think what is embarrassing is having Paris Hilton on your FB page

My 12 year old asked if that was his speech, my 9 year old said he really loved his movies (Morgan Freeman)

I liked this quote..Yes i stole it:
"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear." - Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was a terrorist. That's why he was gaoled.

Funny thing, how we remember him, as the great statesman instrumental in freeing the blacks from apartheid.

Whereas Yassar Arafat, who fought his whole life for the liberation of the Palestinian people, well we remember him somewhat differently.

Guess the Palestinians fall into a different category.

A tad inappropriate.

Not sure how you can compare Palestine and Sth Africa.

It was remembered `somewhat differently`, because it was - and it had a lot to do with this one person and his actions.

"Nelson Mandela was the head of UmKhonto we Sizwe, (MK), the terrorist wing of the ANC and South African Communist Party. At his trial, he had pleaded guilty to 156 acts of public violence including mobilising terrorist bombing campaigns, which planted bombs in public places, including the Johannesburg railway station. Many innocent people, including women and children, were killed by Nelson Mandela’s MK terrorists."

is is planting a bomb in a railway station an act of terrorism?

i do not think you have to be an Afrikaner to answer yes to that.

A tad inappropriate Adolfo? Do you not mean politically incorrect? Whatever, that is a bit rich coming from you.

And how can I compare South Africa to Palestine? Easy, very easy. Two repressed groups of people. I would also argue strongly that of the two groups the Palestinians got the worse deal if body counts are anything to go by.

Are they justified in using violence?

Personally my opinion is that they were both freedom fighters. Unfortunately not everyone sees it that way.

Freedom Fighter or Terrorist simply comes down to whether you are sympathetic to their cause or not.

The Afrikaners didn't have so many "friends" hence the different outcomes of Arafat and Mandela.

For me, Nelson Mandela is the only person in public life who I've thought was inspirational. An aura, a natural presence. Very few have that.

Today's the first day I've ever felt sad over the death of someone I never knew personally.

RIP Sir.

I don't know the answer ( about Mr Mandela ) BUT:

Do you think that all black people who plead guilty to stuff back then were actually guilty?

Would you happen to part of one of the waves of ungrateful WHITE SOUTH AFRICAN immigrants now living the dream in the best country on earth, after fleeing when all those kaffas turned on their masters?

I just smell a whiff of bias in your Nelson Mandela `terrorist` statement.

No need for your 30 year old vitriol in our country today buddy.

The Afrikaners should thank god every day that it was Mandela that came to power and not one of the other ANC leaders.

Look what Mugabe did to the Rhodesians and FRELIMO with the leftover Portuguese in Mozambique.....

It could have been a bloodbath....

I dunno- all I know is

(1) the only necklacing I have seen was black fellas wearing it? (BTW, disgusting regardless of who was)

(2) our legal system in this wonderful country means u cannt be convicted on things like "what your missus did elsewhere" or what colour you are (albeit that one colour gets more help, but I digress...) isn't it great!!????

I am fairly sure it wasn't so great in S.A in the 60's and 70's huh.....

So is bin laden justified with the twin towers? It's a long bow but ghandi never blew anyone up to get his political message across. When one of my kids beats on the other, they never get away with violence as the retaliation. Tell me how one group of humans justifying violence on another is different. You have to remember the his guy is practically sanctisised. He got offered a full pardon for renouncing violence (against his oppressors) but told them to get farked.(admirable but hardly the work of a victim) the state if SA now should somewhat vindicate the actions of apartheid... Perhaps the blacks weren't ready for indipe ndace or the vote. Or maybe they were ..but terrorism us bad and if he did half of what was alledged....
