getfunky said...Any suggestions on shops in Perf?
Cheers.

There was a guy selling electric bikes and conversion stuff from E shed in Freo.
He was in the South West corner of the building. (That's E shed, not Freo markets.)
I haven't been in there for a while but he was there about a month ago.
You can go in and chew his ear and see wot he sez.
Bikes were about $1800 and kits about $1100.
The problem with those things is always the low energy density of a battery compared to petrol motors.
They sell you on the advantages of a 250 or 300 watt motor but neglect to make clear to you the inevitable effect this has on the battery. It kills it!
300 watts at 12 volts is 25 amps. At 18 volts it's 16.6 amps. At 30 volts it's still 10 amps.
Most of those lithium battery cells are about 2 or 3 amp hours capacity, which means at 16 amps it will be flat in 11 minutes if you run it flat strap.
And that's when the batteries are new. As you would know from your laptop battery life, they degrade considerably within a year with constant use.
The idea is good but it's still a bit like the electric cars idea.
Because of the present battery technology, it's not quite there yet.
As soon as they get a decent battery then everything else is well proven and ready to go.
If you do go that way,, Deal extreme in china flog lithium batteries quite cheap and you can use paypal. (They also flog lots of other neat stuff cheap, and free freight to oz)
CAUTION! Lithium rechargeables require a special charger because the cells do not automatically share the charge when recharging.
If you use an ordinary charger you will;_
(i) damage the battery so it wont recharge.
(ii) probably blow the battery up
(iii) possibly burn the house down.
(iv) all of the above.
