The Kalama Catch - Stop the Splash!

Lots of technique coaches in the sport of stand up paddling use the phrase "Slow is Fast". But have you ever wondered why that saying holds true during a paddle stroke? Kalama knows, but of course when it comes to Stand Up Paddling technique, Dave Kalama knows it all. In this instructional video he explains exactly why rushing your paddle stroke could actually be hurting your race results. It's all got to do with air pockets being caught during the first stage of each stroke, and you can easily tell if it's happening by watching your paddle blade! Next time you're out paddling, take a look at what happens the moment your stand up paddle blade touches the water. If a huge eruption of water comes flying towards your ankles, you're pulling too early! Instead, let the blade enter the water cleanly first, then pull it towards you once it's submerged. In doing so, the blade won't have any attached air bubbles, and you'll get 100% of the effort returned to you in speed. Try it out on your next session, and remember, when you want to speed up - slow down!
