Doug Campbell, Paris Stowell, Mark Spearman, James Brewer and Lloyd Collins are heading off to Niteroi, Brazil to compete in the International Optimist World Championship from 4-15th August.

Attending the World Championship is a worthy reward for these sailors who often train up to four times a week.

They earned their places by achieving top five positions at the National Championship held in Mandurah in January.

They will be accompanied by the immensely experienced Royal Perth Yacht Club coach Diego Figueroa who has been instrumental in improving the standard of Optimist sailing in Western Australia. Currently there are 219 entries from 49 countries - each country is allowed a maximum of five sailors.

Sailors can race the Optimist up to and including the year they turn fifteen. Racing is intense and at an incredibly high level.

Former top optimist sailors names can be seen in major international events world-wide and in fact former Optimist sailors were over 50% of the dinghy skippers at the last Olympics.
