Thai sailors do well at IODA Asian Championship

9:50 PM Sat 1 Nov 2008 GMT
The 19th IODA Asian Championship in Qatar attracted 61 sailors from ten Asian countries plus the New Zealand second team as guests.

A strong finish of 5/1/3 in the final races secured victory for Chinese sailor Yang Yang (25th in last summer's Worlds) ahead of his compatriot Zhang Xiaotian.

Three medals for Thailand

The championship was an oustanding success for the Thais who for the first time in the history of the event won the IODA Asian Team Racing Championship and, through Noppakao Poonpat, girls' gold and over-all bronze. In the team racing final they beat off a strong challenge from Malaysia, with China taking bronze ahead of Japan, while in the individual event Noppakao finished just one point away from silver and 36 points ahead of her nearest rival.

80 countries

The championship concludes the 2008 IODA programme of seven continental and world championships in which over 700 sailors from 80 countries have participated.
