The SWD crew, skippered by David Pescud, is giving Queensland and NSW schools and disability groups the opportunity to experience life at sea as part of a program to encourage children with disabilities to pursue their goals.
Known as the Northern Schools program, SWD have undertaken this adventure every year for the last 8 years, meeting thousands of kids and schools teachers along the way.
The SWD crew, who recently won their division in the 2007/08 Sydney to Hobart. will sail down the Queensland coast docking at different ports along the way. In 2003, SWD broke the non-stop circumnavigation of Australia world record.
'Our recent win in the Sydney to Hobart has really put the wind in our sails and we think this a unique chance to show and encourage children with disabilities to consider what they can do, not what they can't.'
The Sailors with disABILITIES yacht will be sailed by mostly disabled crew with the assistance of some able-bodied crew.
Coffs Harbour is the final port before heading back to Sydney. SWD have dedicated three or more days in each port to sailing expeditions with children from special schools and their carers.
General public are welcome to visit the boat and crew at each scheduled port stop - dates are below.
