| The NSW Government is selling off its ageing transport fleet in a bid to fund an anticipated Budget deficit of $2 billion.
More than $4 million worth of buses, JetCats and RailCorp railway sleepers are up for grabs.
Sydney Ferries said yesterday it had two offers for its JetCat fleet sitting idle in Mort Bay, near Balmain. The three JetCats, which served the Manly-Circular Quay route, were dumped by the Government on December 31, with private operator Bass and Flinders now running the service.
Industry insiders say each JetCat is 'probably worth' $500,000 but with the global economic slowdown all three could be sold for $1 million.
Sydney Ferries advertised the three JetCats in numerous international and local maritime publications and websites.
Across town, the State Transit Authority is hoping to net more than $150,000 by selling 20 retired Mercedes buses. State Transit has 2061 buses and is flogging the 29-year-old vehicles in a bid to drop the average age of its fleet.
Buses are expected to sell for $7000-8000 each.
RailCorp has just put to tender a 12-month contract to dispose of used timber sleepers.
Industry experts said RailCorp could take $3.3 million on the 165,000 timber sleepers, which can be bought at hardware stores for about $30 each.
