Last year the Heaven Can Wait 24 hour race raised nearly $13,000 for charity and this year the Heaven Can Wait Yacht Club is on track to beat that record ahead of this long weekends epic onwater race.
In a Heaven Can Wait first, a virtual web based sponsorship race is increasing donations collected for the Cancer Council of NSW and widening audience participation ahead of the 24 hours race and the One Lap Dash.
Hosted by the not for profit organisation Everyday Hero, individual web pages for each boat entered in this year's Heaven Can Wait event were created with the facility to donate in the name of your favourite boat or crew.
This has proven to be quite successful with $11,985 dollars raised at the time of this writing. up more than $3k in last 24 hours and on track to reach $15k before the race finishes on Sunday.
Here are the leading boats
As totals are tallied for each boat individually it allows for the natural competitive streak in all yachties to shine with each boat and crew chasing down sponsorship from friends and workmates in order to advance themselves in the standings.
Here is the current midrace progress positions on line honours, with Dental Practice and Industry powered Kinross having opened up a gap on the following fleet. However any one of the current top ten could catch some private breeze and grab second place. The Spindrift crew did a very snappy spinnaker hoist and look like they could easily pass some of the boats ahead on the run. However the big mover is Mark Cherrington;s Windchaser/ She found a private breeze, in the form of a big donation from Spitfire Communications and she has moved from fourth to second place.
1. Kinross Team $2,855.00 AUD
2. Windchaser Team $2,250.00 AUD
3. Kelly 2 Team $870.00 AUD
4. TScom.org Team $865.00 AUD
5. Try Flying Team $680.93 AUD
6. Two Tribes Team $575.00 AUD
7. Moon Dance Team $570.00 AUD
8. Spindrift Team $545.00 AUD
9. Heaven Can Wait Team $525.00 AUD
10. Deja Vu Team $450.00 AUD
The ability to use a secure third party organisation to process all donations and issue tax receipts has lifted a huge burden off the Heaven Can Wait organisers and also allowed for significant reductions in entry fees, which up until now, were the primary source of charitable revenue gathering.
Early adopters have driven this virtual race from its inception and to their credit have raised significant funds in a short period of time.
It is a truly level paying field and speed on the water does not necessarily translate to speed in a sponsorship race, as was shown by the intrepid Moon Dance which is a 6 m Jarcat and lead for a significant time in front of a rather fast Egan 9.2 Catamaran called Two Tribes.
So the challenge is there for those entered in either the 24hr or the One Lap Dash to get 'racing' before the race and participate in this virtual online contest.

Not all your mates can participate on the water but they sure can help in our race to raise a record level of funds for the Cancer Council in 2009.
