Gold Coast boating fatality leaves 'unanswered questions'

Gold Coast Water Police are still investigating the collision between a runabout and a barge which resulted in the death of 73-year-old Gavin Willmann on Monday.

A 50.0-metre barge, being propelled by a 14.0-metre tugboat, was en route to the Gold Coast Broadwater for council work when it collided with the runabout.

The accident, at Jacobs Well, north of the tourist strip, has left police somewhat puzzled as to the accident's cause.

Investigating officer Senior-Constable Bruce Kolkka said speed had not been a factor;

'Both vessels displayed the correct navigation lights and although the accident took place before sunrise conditions were clear, no wind to speak of and the water was calm,' he said.

'Additionally, we're informed that those aboard both vessels were well acquainted with the area's waterways.'

The 4.7-metre Seafarer runabout, an outboard-powered centre console design, was damaged, but remained afloat and was towed to shore after the collision.

Garry Sheehan, the other occupant of the runabout, was shocked, but uninjured.

He had fished regularly with the deceased for more than 20-years.

The Forensic Crash Unit will continue investigating the cause of the accident.
