Cronulla Sailing Club sinking under bureaucracy

It has been anything other than plain sailing for Cronulla Sailing Club as a second storey addition remains unoccupied following a dispute with Sydney Water.

The expansive addition boasts million dollar views over Gunnamatta Bay but has yet to gain Sutherland Shire Council approval to open because of issues relating to water supply.

According to club Commodore Paul Kelly, the problem began when the club wanted to access an 80mm service line on adjoining Sydney Water property in which to connect a fire hydrant.

'The problem was it turned out to be a 25mm line, not 80mm as indicated on the plans,' Mr Kelly said.

In a letter dated August 16, 2006, then Water Utilities Minister David Campbell confirmed the club's permission to attach its hydrant to the Sydney Water service line. The line was built in 1969 to serve a sewage pumping station.

Mr Kelly, a plumber by trade, said the 25mm copper line was unacceptable and had prevented the club from completing the additions to council's satisfaction.

'Members have given countless hours of their time to build the extension,' he said.

'And now Sydney Water tell us it could be up to another 18 months before the problem is fixed.'
