'Canadians Fogh, Cheer, Devries CAN 230 fighting hard with Peter Hall, Phllip Kerrigan and Gavin Flinn CAN 225 at the Past North Americans - 2009 Soling Worlds Championship preview'

2009 Soling Worlds, Lake Ontario Canada. The fleet sailed in excellent conditions. The wind started from the northwest and then shifted to the north. It was blowing mostly between 16 and 19 knots with some gusts reaching the 25, and the local teams showed their knowledge.

/ Gull team CAN 230 with Hans Fogh, Cheer and Devries took the gun in the first race and then a third in the second race of the day brought them into first place overall with 12 pts. CAN 225 with Hall, Kerrigan and Flinn kept moving up the board. With a second in the first race and a win in the second race they jumped into the second place overall with 13 pts.
It was just not a good day for the team Marinepool GER 300 with Koch, Koch, Bornemann who just 10 minutes before the first race, broke their main halyard and despite all attempts, dropping the mast in the choppy seas, had no choice but to come into shore, quickly fix it and sail back for the second race where they finished second and kept the third overall with 15 pts.
In the back of the fleet there were some interesting things happening with broaches, Chinese jibes and other problems, made the race fun for watching. And inshore back from racing different beer types were waiting for the sailors who gathered at the mooring area, enjoying the sun and chilly air.
There is only a five point spread between the fifth and first place teams at this event. There are three countries and three continents fighting for the 2009 Soling World trophy, Canada certainly have the best chance at the moment with first, second and fifth place.
On Saturday light winds are forecast Two races are scheduled starting at 1100. After races on Saturday there will be members meeting and a Presentation Dinner.
