49er and 29er Nationals: Another perfect day out in Matilda Bay

10:31 PM Sun 4 Jan 2009 GMT

Another perfect day out in Matilda Bay for the 29er and 49er National Championships held in front of Mounts Bay Sailing Club. A further four heats were held today leaving only two more races for the final day of racing tomorrow.

The first heat was held in a light south easterly, but then the Fremantle Doctor kindly provided a 10 to 15 knot south westerly for the remaining three heats.

Will and Sam Phillips from Sorrento SCBC had a good day out in the 49ers with two first places and a second. David O'Connor and Iaian Jensen from Woolahra were back on the water today after repairs to their boat from an earlier collision. They also won two heats, but on current points are still behind local Mounts Bay sailors Steve Thomas and Luke Parkinson. However things will change tomorrow when O'Connor will get redress average points for races missed from the collision.

In 29ers Victorian sailors James Sly and Andrew Gillies cemented their position at the top of the ladder with two more wins. Mounts Bay sailors Daniel Roberts and Leo Showell are running second, with Queensland's Angus Rankin and James Dahl running a very close third.

The regatta will end tomorrow with presentations planned at Mounts Bay Sailing Club late afternoon. On Tuesday some of the 29ers will head south to Mandurah for the Youth Championships.
