World Kiteboarding champion goes kitesurfing in North QLD

Andy - Slim chance into the sunset
Andy Yates, currently ranked world number one in the PKRA, took a trip north last year to go kitesurfing with the guys from In The Loop Kiteboarding. They trekked to some amazing (and remote) locations like Lizard and Rattlesnake island from Alva beach, to ride in crystal blue water with howling wind (through winter!) With ideal training locations like this - it's no wonder Andy won first place in the world kiteboarding tour on the gold coast last year!

Check out the video below, and keep in mind these locations aren't for the faint hearted - the islands are full of nasty sea critters, sharp rocks or coral and if you did happen to mess yourself up - the isolation would be of serious concern!

Remember this video was filmed almost two years ago! The skills and style of Andy's riding has progressed ten fold since he started the would tour in 2009. Andy's currently making his way to Morocco for the second stop of the 2011 PKRA world tour - after finished seventh in round one. He says round one in Thailand was just a warm up, and that this will be his throw away result for the series (You get 1 discard). Either way, all of Australia's behind him - wishing him luck in the next round of the tour which kicks off next week on the 29th.

Opening in August 2007, Kitepower Australia Queensland, or KPQ, is the newest addition to the Kitepower chain. In September 2011, KPQ moved a few blocks down the road to a newly refurbished shopfront. The move allowed the shop to expand into other watersports like stand-up paddling and wakeboarding, as well as beachwear and toys. Across the road from the store is Pelican park and Bells beach, which are the perfect locations for flying kites and practising all kinds of watersports...
