Another shark mauling - French Kitesurfer off Port Moresby

There's been yet another shark attack this week, this time off Port Moresby, PNG - adding to the recent string of seemingly coordinated shark attacks all over the world. Is this a case of 'too many sharks'? Or could it all have been blown out of proportion, being caught up in the recent media frenzy of shark mania. 

Take a look for yourself - shark attack? Or reef rash? If I told you it was reef rash, you would probably believe me. It looks like the guy in the orange shirt is on my side too - it doesn't look too bad. In all seriousness though - it was a shark, and according to the medical experts the cut went right to the bone. In fact it was so serious, the French diplomat had to be flown to Brisbane for treatment. 

Thomas Viot, 30 - says "the shark, which was at least 6.5ft long, lunged at me as I stood on my kiteboard. I don't know how I managed it after the attack, but somehow I succeeded in riding back to the shore with my kite." Thomas didn't actually see the 6.5 foot long shark that bit him; but experts believe that it was a tiger shark, which are well known on the reefs around Port Moresby, PNG. 

Thomas is now well on the way to a full recovery in Brisbane, the French diplomat says he'll get straight back in the water as soon as he can. After all, he's already been stung by a stingray - what else could possibly get him out there?
