Cavalier 30

We have a stay in the cabin that runs from the keel to the base plate of the mast. It does not seem to do anything and admittedly has broken. On the top side there is a plate with a hole to hook into. We have never used it.

Before we get to a rigger I am wondering if the boat is safe to sail.

Im wondering if it's like the baby stay at the front and something to do with kite flying.

Any ideas?
